Delve into the 16th Century and discover what role you would have played in Elizabethan society.

This simple online toy had three clear objectives in support of a headline exhibition: give an online audience some background context, encourage social sharing and increase ticket sales.

Being the National Portrait Gallery’s first ever game commission, the digital, learning and interpretation teams were closely involved in concept exploration and content development.

Over a few minutes, players answer eight questions that match them to the portrait – and amusing character biography – of a subject in the ‘Elizabeth I & Her People’ exhibition. This tried and tested method of appealing to people’s curiosity was perfect for an online audience.

The HTML5 webapp generated 15,000 unique visits and more than 2,000 tweets during launch month – not bad for 16th century portraiture!
